The 18 Movements of Tai Chi Qigong

If like me you come to The 18 Movements of Tai Chi Qigong (Or Shibashi as it is more commonly known) after practising Kung Fu or Tai Chi, you will probably find this form simplistic.

However, this simplicity of movement hides it’s effectiveness. I worked in Mental Health for 16 years and for 12 years taught this form to clients. At one point I was running 3 classes a week as the demand was so high. Why? Anecdotal evidence suggests that it reduces anxiety. People would report leaving feeling calmer than when they arrived. Also having a sense of control over their mental health also seemed to boost their self-esteem and confidence.

Unlike many Qigong forms that date back hundreds of years, the 18 Movements were developed in the 1980’s. Accredited to Lin Housheng, the form takes movements from other Tai Chi and Qigong forms. Each movement is repeated 6 times and flows smoothly into the next in a continuous stream that mirrors the flow of breath.
